A Wine Lover's Diary, part 217 (December 1, 2008)

Monday, November 24: Worked on the cellar book. This evening Deborah and I went to see a preview of Australia with Nicole Kidman and Hugh Jackman. Arrived in time to have a glass of Jacob's Creek Sparkling Rosé (a blend of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir) – a really well made product with a dry raspberry flavour that finishes with citrus acidity.

Tuesday, November 25: Picked up wines for Thursday tasting. For dinner opened a tetrapak of French Rabbit Merlot. I have not been a fan of French Rabbit but this Merlot (biodynamic?) was really very tasty and had varietal character.

Wednesday, November 26: Received the following email which may have come from e.e. cummings reincarnated:

i am a sri lankan. i am not doing any job but at home i am making home made good king coconut wine. So to get a income i would like to sell this items .For this king coconut wine no alcohol only yeast adding.i have read your web sit. so tony if you can help me to get a income from my stuff, please e mail me than i can send you a sample. hope your will reply me.

thanking you

may god bless you.

Being a trusting sort of bloke I took the email at face value and replied explaining that it is illegal to sell wine in Ontario unless you're the LCBO. (If you add yeast you're going to ferment so there will be alcohol.) Coconut wine – the mind boggles. Had a tasting with Vincent Hannah of bulk wines from Bronco (the Two Buck Chuck guys). There must be a huge inventory of California bulk wine because these samples were 2006 and 2005. Not very interesting.

Thursday, November 27: American Thanksgiving. This morning, a tasting at Summerhill liquor store of sparkling wines and ports from Ontario importers. This evening the final dinner tasting of The Robert Home Smith Private Wine Society.

  • Mumm Cuvee Napa Sparkling
  • R Stuart Big Fire Pinot Gris 2006
  • Gallo Family Laguna Ranch Chardonnay 2005
  • R Stuart Big Fire Pinot Noir 2007
  • R Stuart Autograph Pinot Noir 2006

We finished off with a bottle of Gould Campbell Vintage Port 1994.

Friday, November 28: Tonight I leave for Chile so the day is spent clearing my desk, cancelling newspapers, finishing this diary and writing next week's Wines of the Week.
