Ruby-coloured; the wine has a bouquet of cherries, wet earth and mint. It's medium-bodied with a cherry and sweet rhubarb flavour. Well made. ****

Barefoot Cellars Chardonnay (California)

A label owned by Gallo in California, produces non-vintage wines of great value. Pale straw in colour, it has an oaky nose and a flavour of buttered popcorn with a sweet note. An uncomplicated, easy drinking wine in the style of Lindemans Bin 65 Chardonnay. ***½

Marques de Caceres Seleccionada Crianza 2005 (Rioja, Spain)

A fruit-driven red made from Tempranillo, Graciano and Grenache grapes. Aged for 16 months in French oak, this wine has a nose of raspberries and black plums with vanilla and cinnamon spice from the oak. The mouth feel is velvety and the tannins soft. ****
