 WINES OF THE WEEK

More Wines of the Week

  • Marcus James Malbec
  • La Vieille Ferme Blanc 2007
  • Canei Vino Frizzante

Marcus James Malbec (Argentina)
($9.25, LCBO #336008)
I guess Malbec is the new Shiraz – at least this signature grape from Argentina seems to be on everyone's lips these days. Wine lovers can spot a bargain, no doubt about it because Argentinean Malbec is coming in at under $10. This wine has a well extracted jammy blackberry flavour with a note of black licorice. It finishes dry and firm with soft tannins. ***½
Food match: BBQ burgers; ribs

La Vieille Ferme Blanc 2007 (Cotes du Luberon)
($18.95, 1500 mL, LCBO #34991)
For those backyard BBQ parties it makes sense to buy a magnum of white wine. Currently at the LCBO on limited time offer ending next week is a very drinkable white called La Vieille Ferme – The Old Farm. Light straw in colour, it has a minerally white peach nose, and on the palate, citrus fruit flavours. It's full-bodied, well balanced. ***½
Food match: shrimp salad; grilled scampi

Canei Vino Frizzante (Piedmont)
($9.40, LCBO #107581)
A lightly sparkling wine from Piedmont made from Muscat grapes. Imagine smelling a carnation and biting into a sweet orange at the same time. That's the flavour sensation you get from this wine. It's light, semi-sweet and spicy. And only 8.5% alcohol. ***½
Food match: aperitif wine; light cakes
