680News wine reviews – May 8–10, 2009

Caliterra Sauvignon Blanc
Sauvignon Blanc, with its crisp refreshing citrus and grassy flavours, is the perfect outdoor wine on a warm day. Especially if the wine has a tropical fruit note, like many of the Sauvignons from Chile. Try Caliterra Sauvignon Blanc 2008. The wine is medium-bodied with a grassy, pineapple and gooseberry flavour. It costs $10.95 a bottle at the LCBO. Try it with seafood. That's Caliterra Sauvignon Blanc 2008 from Chile. J.P. Chenet Classic Cabernet Syrah
South America doesn't have it all its own way in producing very drinkable wines under $10. The other night I had a bottles of J.P. Chenet Cabernet-Syrah 2007 from France's Pays d'Oc region. This blend is deep ruby in colour with plum and blackcurrant notes on the nose, tempered with vanilla oak. It's medium-bodied with a silky mouth-feel, displaying flavours of black fruits and spice. For best results pour it into a decanter or a jug an hour before serving and try it with BBQ ribs or burgers. That's J.P. Chenet Cabernet-Syrah 2007 from France. Chenet is spelled C.H.E.N.E.T. For Post City Magazines, I'm Tony Aspler. ($9.95, LCBO #90472)
