680News wine reviews – May 22–24, 2009

Southbrook Triomphe Chardonnay 2006
Southbrook winery is architecturally one of the most spectacular buildings in Niagara on the Lake. This showcase winery also produces some nifty wines. Currently at Vintages outlets is Southbrook Triomphe Chardonnay 2006, selling for $21.95 a bottle. If that sounds steep in this economy, you won't find a better white Burgundy at twice the price. The wine is dry and medium-bodied with a toasty caramel nose, well extracted fruit, very flavourful with dry peach and citrus notes. Try it with grilled salmon, That's Southbrook Triomphe Chardonnay 2006 from Ontario. For Post City Magazines, I'm Tony Aspler. ($21.95, Vintages #117572)

Richard Hamilton Lot 148 Merlot 2006
Merlot is not usually a grape variety we associate with Australia, but currently at Vintages – and get it before it disappears – is Richard Hamilton Lot 148 Merlot 2006 from McLaren Vale. This dense ruby-coloured wine has a nose of red berries and milk chocolate; it's medium-bodied and firm on the palate with a lush blueberry flavour. It costs $19.95 at Vintages. Try it with butterflied leg of lamb on the Barbie. Richard Hamilton Lot 148 Merlot 2006 from Australia. If you miss any of my reviews, you can read them by visiting 680News.com and clicking on my link. For Post City Magazines, I'm Tony Aspler. ($19.95, Vintages #39461)
