Peninsula Ridge Inox Chardonnay 2008 (Ontario)
$12.95 (LCBO #594200)
The French term inox translates as "stainless steel," and that is what the French winemaker Jean Pierre Colas at Niagara's Peninsula Ridge winery calls his unoaked Chardonnay. The wine is straw coloured with a minerally, smoky, green apple nose; it's medium-bodied with sweet apple fruit with a spicy note and finishes crisply dry. ***½ (87)
Food match: spaghetti vongole; sautéed shrimps

J.J. McWilliams Chardonnay 2007 (Australia)
$9.95 (LCBO #91744)
Deeply coloured with a nose of buttered popcorn and pineapple; full on the palate with sweet fruit, nicely balanced. Medium-bodied and easy drinking. ***½ (86)
Food match: pineapple chicken; pork ribs

Colio Girls Night Out Cabernet Shiraz 2007 (Ontario)
$12.95 (LCBO #134205)
The back label reads: "If only a man could be as dependable as this silky red thing." (Referring to a red dress on the front label.) Light ruby in colour with a nose of currants and at ouch of oak; soft and velvety on the palate with redcurrant and blackberry flavours. Easy drinking. No chess problem here. ***½ (85+)
Food match: pizza; hot dogs
