Casa Thaulero Merlot Cabernet Sauvignon 2008
You don't get many wines at the LCBO that are priced at $6.95 a bottle – and when you do they're pretty marginal in terms of quality. But I was impressed by a red wine from the Abruzzo region of Italy that I tasted recently – it's Casa Thaulero Merlot Cabernet Sauvignon 2008. The wine is dense purple in colour with a nose of cedar, cooked cherry and leather. The taste is dry, medium-bodied with a plum and cherry flavour and a touch of mint on the finish. Its an ideal BBQ wine for the price. That's Casa Thaulero Merlot Cabernet Sauvignon 2008 from Italy. For Post City Magazines, I'm Tony Aspler. ($6.95, LCBO #621953)
Strewn Chardonnay Barrel-Aged 2007
At sip & Savour Ontario last month – the celebration of Ontario wines – I tasted a barrel-aged Chardonnay at a great price. It's Strewn Barrel-Aged Chardonnay 2007 from Niagara and it costs $11.95 at the LCBO on a limited time offer. It's light straw in colour with a perfumed apple nose. The wine is medium-bodied, dry and well balanced with lively acidity. The oak is not intrusive but fleshes out the middle palate. That's Strewn Barrel-Aged Chardonnay 2007. Strewn is spelt S.T.R.E.W.N and rhymes with swoon. Try it with grilled trout or a runny Brie. For Post City Magazines, I'm Tony Aspler. ($11.95 – $12.95 after the limited time offer, LCBO #522730)
