Beringer White Zinfandel 2008 (California)
$9.90 (LCBO #239756)
Don't dismiss white Zinfandel out of hand. It has its place in the wine lover's cellar, if only to introduce other people to wine, and it's the perfect wine to have with highly spiced dishes. This one is pink with a bluish tint in colour and has a candied strawberry flavour but enough citrus acidity to stop it from cloying. ***½ (86)
Food match: light curries, Thai or Mexican food

Nederburg Sauvignon Blanc 2008 (South Africa)
$10.95 (LCBO #382713)
South Africa is producing Sauvignon Blanc in New Zealand style for nearly half the price. It's very pale in colour with a nose of gooseberries, herbs and wet stones; it's fresh and lively on the palate with a tart gooseberry flavour. **** (87)
Food match: goat's cheese salad; grilled calamari

Henry of Pelham Pinot Noir 2007 (Niagara)
$16.95 (LCBO #13904)
The wine is light ruby in colour with a nose of raspberries and minerals. It has an elegant taste of black raspberries carried on lively acidity. **** (87)
Food match: grilled salmon; quail
