More Wines of the Week

  • Charamba Doura 2007
  • La Vieille Ferme Côtes du Ventoux 2007
  • J.M. Fonseca Periquita 2006

Charamba Doura 2007 (Portugal)
$9.45 (LCBO #78105)
A blend of four grapes used for port – Touriga Nacional, Tinta Franca, Tinta Roriz and Tinta Barroca. Deep ruby in colour with a spicy blackberry and cinnamon nose. It's fruity, dry and fresh on the palate with supple tannins. ***½ (86)
Food match: ribs; hamburgers

La Vieille Ferme Côtes du Ventoux 2007 (France)
$11.95 (LCBO #263640)
A blend of Grenache, Syrah, Mourvedre and Cinsault and at a bottle it punches well above its weight. The wine has a bouquet of blackberries, licorice and fresh herbs and enough oak to give it a round mouth-feel. **** (88)
Food match: red meat dishes; aged Cheddar.

J.M. Fonseca Periquita 2006 (Portugal)
$9.45 (LCBO #25262)
A blend of three local varieties – Castelão, Trincadeira and Aragones. What surprised me about the 2006 vintage was that it was no longer that rustic, peasant wine I remembered of old but very elegant and stylish. The 2006 Periquita has a nose of cherry and leather with a floral note; it's light and fresh on the palate, a versatile food wine. **** (87)
Food match: cassoulet; bœuf bourguignon
