 WINES OF THE WEEK

More Wines of the Week

  • Masi Masianco Pinot Grigio Verduzzo 2008
  • Astrolabe Voyage Sauvignon Blanc 2008
  • Stoneleigh Chardonnay 2007

Masi Masianco Pinot Grigio Verduzzo 2008 (Veneto)
$14.95 (LCBO #620773)
If you're looking for a Pinot Grigio with character, try Masi's Masianco 2008. What makes this wine interesting is the addition of a grape called Verduzzo to the Pinot Grigio, which gives the wine a richer mouth feel and a touch more fruit. The flavours are white peach and citrus. The wine is medium-bodied, fresh and easy drinking. ***½ (87)
Food match: shrimp in a cream sauce; aperitif wine

Astrolabe Voyage Sauvignon Blanc 2008 (New Zealand)
$19.95 (Vintages #10421)
This Saturday, Vintages is releasing one of the best Sauvignon Blancs I've tasted from New Zealand since Cloudy Bay, and it's half the price. The wine is pale straw in colour with a nose of guava and cut grass. It's round and full on the palate, beautifully balanced with a gooseberry and guava flavour that lingers for a long time on the palate. ***** (90)
Food match: grilled salmon; lobster

Stoneleigh Chardonnay 2007 (New Zealand)
$16.95 (LCBO #288795)
A Chardonnay from New Zealand rather than a Sauvignon. Straw-  coloured, this wine has a minerally, toasty, smoky oak nose backed by apple flavours. Medium-bodied and full in the mouth, the fruit flavours are sweet backed by citrus acidity. **** (87)
Food match: roast chicken; Brie
