Wolf Blass Gold Label Sparkling Pinot Noir/Chardonnay 2005 (South Australia)

An inexpensive champagne substitute for the holidays. Light straw in colour with a toasty, honey and apple nose; full on the palate with tangerine and cranberry flavours and lively acidity. ****½ (89)
Food match: grilled salmon; chicken

Penfolds Thomas Hyland Chardonnay 2007 (Adelaide, South Australia)
$19.95 (Vintages #611228)
A full-throttle Chardonnay at as reasonable price. Straw coloured with an intense nose of apples and vanilla oak with a citrus note; nicely balanced apple and crème brûlée flavours and a macadamia nut finish. ****½ (89)
Food match: blackened scallops; veal chop

Pirramimma Shiraz 2005 (McLaren Vale, South Australia)

A big, meaty Shiraz. Dense purple-black colour; high toned nose of blackberries, Christmas pudding and spicy notes; full-bodied and mouth-filling with flavours of blackberry and dark chocolate and a dry, savoury finish. ****½ (89)
