680News wine reviews – December 25–27, 2009

Graham Beck Pinotage 2008
Pinotage is one of those wines you love or you hate. This South African grape is a cross between Pinot Noir and Cinsault and I happen to like it for its smoky, tarry flavour. Graham Beck Pinotage 2008 is a deep purple-ruby in colour with that characteristic tarryness with an iodine note. It tastes of sweet blackberries and smoke and is well priced at $14.95 at Vintages outlets. Try it with pepper steak or mushroom risotto. That's Graham Beck Pinotage 2008 from South Africa at Vintages outlets. For Post City Magazines, I'm Tony Aspler. ($14.95, Vintages #593459

Dr. Loosen Doctor L Riesling 2008
German Riesling continues to be under-priced in our market because, for some reason, consumers are just not hitching up with this great wine category. Do yourself a flavour and pick up a bottle of Dr. Loosen's Dr. L Riesling 2008 from Vintages. For $13.95 you get a wine that is light on the palate at 9.5% alcohol with flavours of sweet grapefruit and peach with a thread of minerality running through it. It's just the wine to drink before the food is brought to the table. That's Dr. Loosen Doctor L Riesling 2008 from the Mosel in Germany. For Post City Magazines, I'm Tony Aspler. ($13.95, Vintages #599274)
