680News wine reviews – March 5–7, 2010

Ortas Rasteau Côtes du Rhône Villages 2008
Rasteau is one of 18 villages in the Côtes du Rhône Villages appellation. These wines are made from a blend of Grenache, Syrah and Mourvèdre grapes and are good value for the price. The latest to arrive at the LCBO is Ortas Rasteau Côtes du Rhône Villages 2008. It's dense purple in colour with a bouquet of blackberries, and dark chocolate with a herbal note. Lots of well extracted fruit here with flavours of blackberry and coffee bean. It costs $15 and works well with hearty stews, red meats or hard cheeses. That's Ortas Rasteau Côtes du Rhône Villages 2008 from France. For Post City Magazines, I'm Tony Aspler. ($15.00, LCBO#998716)

Long Flat Semillon Sauvignon 2008
The dry white wines of Bordeaux are made from a blend of Semillon and Sauvignon Blanc. The Aussies make the same blend only they call it by the name of the grapes. Long Flat Semillon Sauvignon 2008 from South Australia is straw coloured with a nose of pear, cut grass and a waxy-floral note; it's medium-bodied with fresh, lively citrus and pear flavours. It's nicely balanced and very good value at $10.95 a bottle. Chill it and serve it with seafood or fish dishes. That's Long Flat Semillon Sauvignon 2008 from Australia at the LCBO. For Post City Magazines, I'm Tony Aspler.  ($10.95, LCBO #183715)
