680News wine reviews – June 25–27, 2010

Señorio de Uñulea Crianza 2006
The Rioja region of Northern Spain has undergone a transformation in the last decade. Many of the producers there are still using the traditional American oak barrels to mature their wines rather than French Barriques. The newest addition to the Rioja shelves is Señorio de Uñulea Crianza 2006. The wine made from Tempranillo offers spicy blackcurrant and soy flavours with a cedary note. It finishes dry and savoury and costs $14.95. Match with red meat dishes. That's Señorio de Uñuela Crianza 2006 from Spain. For Post City Magazines, I'm Tony Aspler, 680 News and 680News.com. ($14.95, LCBO #172544)

Tawse Sketches of Niagara Rosé 2009
Ontario is producing some terrific dry rosés that are perfect for drinking nicely chilled outdoors on a warm summer's day. One of the best is Tawse Sketches of Niagara Rosé 2009, which won a silver medal at the Ontario Wine Awards this year. Deep pink in colour, it has a nose of redcurrant and raspberry with a mineral note. It's a blend of merlot, pinot noir, syrah, cabaret sauvignon, and cabernet franc. Medium-bodied, crisply dry, it has flavours of raspberry and blood orange. It costs $14.95 a bottle. Try it with cold meats and salads. That's Tawse Sketches of Niagara Rosé 2009 from Ontario. For Post City Magazines, I'm Tony Aspler, 680 News and 680News.com. ($14.95, LCBO #172643)
