- Tawse Sketches of Niagara Rosé 2009
- Huff Estates South Bay Chardonnay 2007
- Colio River Rock Red 2008
Three Ontario wines for Canada Day.
Tawse Sketches of Niagara Rosé 2009 (Niagara Peninsula)
$14.95 (LCBO #172643)
This wine won a silver medal at the Ontario Wine Awards this year. Deep pink in colour, it has a nose of redcurrant and raspberry with a mineral note. It's a blend of Merlot, Pinot Noir, Syrah, Cabaret Sauvignon, and Cabernet Franc. Medium-bodied, crisply dry it has flavours of raspberry and blood orange. ****½ (89)
Food match: cold meats and salads.
Huff Estates South Bay Chardonnay 2007 (Prince Edward County)
$29.95 at the winery (www.huffestates.ca)
Voted The White Wine of the Year at the Ontario Wine Awards 2010, it received the highest aggregate score from the judges of all Ontario white wines. The wine comes on like a fine white Burgundy and really deserves its accolade. You can get directions at www.huffestates.ca. *****
Food match: cold salmon; roast chicken
Colio River Rock Red 2008 (Lake Erie North Shore)
$10.95 (LCBO #183103)
Colio has released a series of line-priced VQA wines at $10.95 under the Lake and River series of red, white and rosé. The labels depict that great Canadian symbol, the canoe. I found the red wine they call River Rock Red 2008 particularly attractive for the price. It's a blend of Cabernet Franc, Merlot and Syrah. The wine has a floral, cherry nose and a rose petal and cherry flavour with a touch of tannin to give it structure. ***½
Food match: chicken salad; chilled as an aperitif wine
Enjoy the Canada Day weekend.
