680News wine reviews – July 9–11, 2010

Colio River Rock Red 2008
Colio, the winery in Southwest Ontario, has released a series of line-priced VQA wines at $10.95 under the Lake and River series of red, white and rosé. The labels depict that great Canadian symbol, the canoe. I found the red wine they call River Rock Red 2008 particularly attractive for the price. It's a blend of Cabernet Franc, Merlot and Syrah. The wine has a floral, cherry nose and a rose petal and cherry flavour with a touch of tannin to give it structure. An easy drinking wine you can chill if you like and serve with chicken. That's Colio River Rock Red 2008 from Ontario. For Post City Magazines, I'm Tony Aspler, 680News and 680.com. ($10.95, LCBO #183103)

Feudi di San Marzano Negroamaro 2008
Looking for an inexpensive barbecue wine to go with hamburgers or spicy ribs? There's a new listing from Sicily that will fill the bill nicely – and at an affordable price: Feudi di San Marzano Negroamaro 2008. The Negroamaro grape grown in southern Italy produces deeply coloured wines with rustic flavours of plum and black cherry. The kind of wine you see in those Italian movies when four generations of the family are lunching outdoors at a long table. It costs $11.95 a bottle. That's Feudi di San Marzano Negroamaro 2008 from Sicily. For Post City Magazines, I'm Tony Aspler, 680News and 680.com. ($11.95, Vintages #159442)
