Crasto Vinho Tinto (Douro Valley)
($14.95, Vintages #81588)
Portugal's Douro Valley is known for port production but increasingly red table wines are being made there using port grapes. Crasto Vinho Tinto is a red wine produced by the port lodge Quinta do Crasto. It's a full-bodied red with plum, mulberry and dark chocolate flavours with a smoky note. A very solid wine for the price. **** (87)
Food match: beef stew; mature cheddar

Cono Sur Shiraz 2009 (Chile)
($9.95, LCBO #64295)
Here's a wine under $10 that punches above its weight. Aromas of blackberry, blackcurrant and spicy plum leap out of the glass. On the palate you experience savoury, herbal notes within the sweet fruit. The structure is firm and the oak is not obtrusive. ***˝ (86)
Food match: hamburger; pizza

Stratus Red 2007 (Ontario)
$44 (at the winery – 905-468-1806)
This is quite simply one of the best Bordeaux-style wines I've tasted in Ontario. Redolent with cedar, currant, spice and lavender notes, the blend is seamless. There is an elegance here that distinguishes it from the jammy-ness of other 2007 VQA reds. Beautifully structured, it will cellar for 3–4 years. ***** (93)
Food match: duck breast; rack of lamb
