More Wines of the Week

  • Joseph Drouhin Beaujolais-Villages Nouveau 2010
  • Alvear's Amontillado
  • Flat Roof Manor Merlot 2009

Beaujolais Nouveau is released today (November 18th). Not an inspiring vintage, but the best of them offered by the LCBO is:

Joseph Drouhin Beaujolais-Villages Nouveau 2010 (Burgundy)
$14.95 (LCBO #113266)
Deep purple colour; dry, peppery cherry nose, lean with a slightly bitter finish ***½ (87)
Food match: roast chestnuts; pizza
For reviews of this year's crop of new wines offered by the LCBO, see La primeur – this year's nouveaux and novelli.

Alvear's Amontillado (Spain)
$10.95 (LCBO #112789)
Made from Pedro Ximenez grapes in the Montilla Morilles region. Deep amber colour; high toned, nutty, raisiny nose of baked apple and dried apricot with a floral note; off-dry with great length. Terrific value. (Top chefs use it in cooking.) **** (88)
Food match: soup; cashews

Flat Roof Manor Merlot 2009 (South Africa)
$10.95 (LCBO #129874)
A tasty Merlot at a bargain price. Deep ruby colour; smoky-tarry, blackberry nose; full on the palate with sweet blackcurrant and blueberry flavours. Acidity gives the wine decent length. ***½ (86)
Food match: hamburger; pasta dishes
