680News wine reviews – December 3–5, 2010

Alvear's Amontillado
It's not exactly Sherry because it doesn't come from Jerez; it's produced in the neighbouring region of Montilla. But Alvear's Amontillado is a great bargain at $10.95. Made from the Pedro Ximenez grape, it's deep amber in colour with a high toned, nutty, raisiny nose of baked apple and dried apricot with a floral note. The wine is off-dry with great length. Top Toronto chefs use it for cooking but it's delicious with soups or a bowl of cashews. That's Alvear's Amontillado from Spain. For Post City Magazines, I'm Tony Aspler, 680News and 680News.com. ($10.95, LCBO #112789)

Mud House Sauvignon Blanc 2009
If you're a fan of New Zealand Sauvignon, you should try Mud House Sauvignon Blanc 2009, a wine new to the LCBO. Well priced at $15.95, it has that characteristic grassy, passionfruit nose and flavour, along with racy acidity that gives it a long finish. It's the style of wine that goes well with fish, seafood or vegetable dishes. That's Mud House Sauvignon Blanc 2009 from New Zealand. If you miss any of these reviews, you can read them by visiting 680News.com and clicking on my link. For Post City Magazines, I'm Tony Aspler, 680News and 680News.com. ($15.95, LCBO #190454)
