680News wine reviews – January 28–30, 2011

Casa Lapostolle Merlot 2008
Casa Lapostolle's Winemaker Andrea Leon added 15% of the rare Bordeaux variety Carménère to her Merlot 2008, giving it a very dense purple colour. The oak is deftly handled, projecting a bouquet of vanilla, blueberry and black fruits with an engaging floral note. There is a juicy, sweet core to this wine but it finishes firmly with ripe tannins. You can find it at Vintages outlets for $16.95. It's a versatile food wine that can match most red meat dishes or hard cheeses. That's Casa Lapostolle Merlot 2008 from Chile. Peninsula Ridge Barrel Aged Chardonnay 2009
Here's an Ontario Chardonnay that really punches above its weight. Peninsula Ridge Barrel Aged Chardonnay 2009 is pale straw in colour with a nose of caramel, baked apple, citrus and mineral notes. The wine has a rich mouth-feel with apple and pear flavours filled out with oak. Really good value at $14.95. Serve it with roast chicken or grilled salmon.
