Canada's Best Wines (January 9, 2003)
Vines magazine's publisher, Water Sendzik, and the magazine's
editor, Christopher Walters, have done the Canadian wine lover a great
service. With a panel of experts, they have blind-tasted over 1,000 Canadian
wines and selected half of them for review in a handy pocket book entitled
Vines Buyer's Guide to Canadian Wine (Published by Whitecap at
The selection of wines from across Canada is divided into grape varieties
(Chardonnay, Riesling, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, etc., including Icewine
and other dessert wines). The highest-scoring wines are given a Vines
Award, and the rest are rated according to quality as "Highly Recommended,"
"Recommended" or "Quite Good."
Vines magazine also has a descriptor called "Acceptable," a
faint-praise category that has been omitted from this book for space-saving
reasons and to highlight only what is best in the industry (which is what
the consumer wants).
The book also includes contact information for Canadian wineries, a glossary
of wine tasting terms and other reference sources for Canadian wines.
The entertaining foreword has been written by Steven Page, lead singer
of The Barenaked Ladies, a dedicated oenophile who hosted some of the
tastings for this book at his Toronto home.
