Canada's Best Wines (January 9, 2003)

Vines magazine's publisher, Water Sendzik, and the magazine's editor, Christopher Walters, have done the Canadian wine lover a great service. With a panel of experts, they have blind-tasted over 1,000 Canadian wines and selected half of them for review in a handy pocket book entitled Vines Buyer's Guide to Canadian Wine (Published by Whitecap at $19.95).

The selection of wines from across Canada is divided into grape varieties (Chardonnay, Riesling, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, etc., including Icewine and other dessert wines). The highest-scoring wines are given a Vines Award, and the rest are rated according to quality as "Highly Recommended," "Recommended" or "Quite Good."

Vines magazine also has a descriptor called "Acceptable," a faint-praise category that has been omitted from this book for space-saving reasons and to highlight only what is best in the industry (which is what the consumer wants).

The book also includes contact information for Canadian wineries, a glossary of wine tasting terms and other reference sources for Canadian wines.

The entertaining foreword has been written by Steven Page, lead singer of The Barenaked Ladies, a dedicated oenophile who hosted some of the tastings for this book at his Toronto home.
