A Restaurant with Extra Sparkle (February 20, 2003)
The restaurant with the best list for champagnes in Toronto is Café
Brussels at 124 Danforth Avenue (416-465-7363).
Chef/proprietor Roger Wils has amassed an impressive collection that
includes 10 different half bottles, a magnum of Krug 1989 ($465), and
magnums of Salon Cuvee S 1985 ($475) and Cuvee S 1976 ($1,200). Or you
could go crazy with a half bottle of Heidsieck Brut 1919 ($3,000), Taittinger
Collection 1981 (750 mL, $650) or the Taittinger Collection "Roy
Lichtenstein" 1985 ($650).
The 17 non-vintage Champagnes Brut are listed by village (Reims, Tours-sur-Marnes,
Epernay, Champillon, Chigney-les-Roses, Ay, Mareuil sur Ay, Le Mesnil).
Under Blanc de Blancs, again by village, there are 25, including seven
vintages of Salon from 1995 back to 1979.
If you're into vintage champagnes you have a choice of forty-seven (including
four vintages of Ployez Jacquemart), and if you like rosés there
are 16 available, including my favourite, Billecart Salmon 1995.
