680News wine reviews – April 15–17, 2011

Malivoire Gewurztraminer 2009
Gewurztraminer is like Shredded Wheat. You either love it or you hate it. I happen to like Gewurz for its exotic, over-the-top bouquet and flavour. Alsace is its spiritual home but Ontario can also step up to the plate with this tricky variety. At Vintages is Mailvoire Gewurztaminer 2009, which has true varietal character – a lychee and rose petal nose, off-dry on the palate with a spicy, floral sweet grapefruit flavour. It costs $24.95 a bottle. You can either drink it as an aperitif or serve with spicy Asian dishes. That's Malivoire Gewurztraminer 2009 from Ontario at Vintages outlets. For Post City Magazines, I'm Tony Aspler, 680 News and 680 News.com. ($24.95, Vintages #542522)

Giesen Sauvignon Blanc 2009
There is something eminently satisfying about a chilled glass of Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc from New Zealand. The style is unmistakable – that pale straw colour with a nose of gooseberries, minerals and nettle leaf. A good, and value-driven, example is Giesen Sauvignon Blanc 2009. The wine is crisply dry to the point of tartness but elevated by its rich gooseberry flavour. It costs $14.95 at Vintages outlets. Serve it with oysters or other shell fish. That's Giesen Sauvignon Blanc 2009 from New Zealand. For Post City Magazines, I'm Tony Aspler, 680 News and 680 News.com. ($14.95, Vintages #223180)
