 WINES OF THE WEEK

More Wines of the Week

  • Dievole Rosso di Toscana 2001
  • Robert Mondavi Fumé Blanc 2000
  • Argueso Oloroso Sherry

Dievole Rosso di Toscana 2001 (Tuscany)
$13.05
When the 2000 vintage of this wine was introduced into the LCBO general list in July last year it cost $10.95 (I gave it ****). The price today reflects the fall of the Canadian $ against the euro. But it's still a terrific wine for the price.
Deep purple in colour, it has an earthy, black cherry nose with a vanilla note; medium-bodied with a cherry and lead-pencil-shavings flavour. Great balance and very drinkable now. Very good value. ****
Food match: mushroom risotto, spaghetti carbonara

Robert Mondavi Fumé Blanc 2000 (California)
$29.75 (at Vintages outlets)
This wine has seen less oak than previous vintages of Fumé Blanc (a designation coined by Mondavi but not trademarked so everybody's using it). Medium straw colour with an intense nose of gooseberry, kiwi and freshly cut grass; full-bodied with a lovely mouth feel, well extracted fruit, great balance and a zippy, fresh, lengthy finish. ****
Food match: Caesar salad, goat's cheese

Argueso Oloroso Sherry (Spain)
$17.90 (Vintages outlets)
From Sanlucar de Barrameda. Brown colour with an olive green rim; high-toned, nutty, dried raisin nose; off-dry, full-bodied, rich, dried fig and hazelnut flavours; great length. ****˝
Food match: (room temperature) oxtail soup, (lightly chilled) cashew and Brazil nuts
