680News wine reviews – August 19–21, 2011

Mike Weir Riesling 2008
Mike Weir Riesling 2008 is made from grapes sourced from Chateau des Charmes' 13-year-old vineyard in St. David's. For $14.95 it represents one of the best buys in Ontario white wines. The nose is honeyed grapefruit and lime with a petrol note. It's off-dry, beautifully balanced with succulent peach and citrus flavours. It reminds me of a Rheingau Riesling Kabinett. You'll find it at Vintages outlets. Match it with pork loin or onion tart. That's Mike Weir Riesling 2008 from Ontario. For Post City Magazines, I'm Tony Aspler, 680 News and 680 News.com. ($14.95, Vintages #229286)

Bottega Vino Dei Poeti Prosecco
You don't have to spend a lot to get a good glass of sparkling wine. Sandro Bottega makes grappa in Veneto as well as prosecco and now he's branched out to produce Brunello di Montalcino and Valpolicella and Amarone. His prosecco is delicious stuff. Currently at Vintages is Bottega Vino Dei Poeti Prosecco selling for $16.95. This non-vintage sparkler has a nose of pear, citrus and white blossoms. It's light and fresh with a touch of residual sweetness finishing refreshingly dry. Try it with oysters. That's Bottega Vino Dei Poeti Prosecco from Italy at Vintages outlets. For Post City Magazines, I'm Tony Aspler, 680 News and 680 News.com. ($16.95, Vintages #235044)
