Ontario Wine – Coming Soon to Your Doorstep (March 20, 2003)
Lovers of Ontario wines and those who would like to increase their
acquaintance with them have a new place to turn to fill their glasses,
and they don't even have to step outside to get to it. Winerytohome.com
will bring Ontario's vineyards to your doorstep (as long as your doorstep
is somewhere in Ontario) even brands previously only available
at the wineries.
Winerytohome grew out of an idea that long-time wine lover Doug Towers
developed after researching the Ontario wine industry for a talk he was
invited to give 2001. He was struck by several important and contradictory
- The huge quality improvement in Ontario's wines in the 10-odd years
since the advent of free-trade and the VQA was not fully recognized
by many wine lovers nor evidenced by commensurate sales growth.
- The aggressive (25%) market share increase (from 35% to 44%) forecast
over the next five years by industry in the Wine Council of Ontario's
2001 strategic plan seemed to lack the compelling rationale to support
- About 70% of Ontario's wine brands are not conveniently available
to most consumers on a regular basis, except at the wineries.
It seemed to Doug that there had to be another way to better connect
wineries with their customers. He developed a winery-to-home business
model that enabled a company representing a winery to offer its products
for sale on the web, 24 hours day and seven days a week, and make arrangements
for their home or office delivery at customer-convenient times. He approached
a number of wineries, who proved to be very enthusiastic, and in late
October, 2002, was granted the first such licence to represent Ontario
Winerytohome.com isn't just an online order service, however it
presents detailed tasting notes on the wines from Tony Aspler and David
Lawrason, has provenance and usage notes and allows searching by wine
type or food match. The site also lists current news, happenings and promotions
in the world of Ontario wines.
Winerytohome is currently delivering wines to much of southern Ontario,
with plans to expland coverage to the whole province in the near future.
It currently represents twelve of the top Ontario wineries.
