680News wine reviews – September 16–18, 2011

Yvon Mau Shiraz 2009
When you think of Shiraz you think Australia. But  the Bordeaux shipper Yvon Mau has co-opted the name for his Syrah wine grown in the Pays d'Aude. For the price it offers outstanding value. Yvon Mau Shiraz 2009 is deep ruby-purple in colour with a spicy black cherry and blueberry bouquet. It offers medium-bodied, dry flavours of plum and cedar with a touch of pepper and shaping tannins. It costs $8.95 at the LCBO. You can't really argue with that. Serve it with pizza or burgers. That's Yvon Mau Shiraz 2009 from France. For Post City Magazines, I'm Tony Aspler, 680News and 680News.com. ($8.95, LCBO #621979)

Maison Roche de Bellene Côtes de Nuits-Villages 2009
Today my wine recommendation is a red Burgundy at a price that's not going to gob-smack you. It's Maison Roche de Bellene Côtes de Nuits-Villages 2009. Made from old vines by the very talented Nicolas Potel, this wine has a bouquet cherry, violets and spicy earth. It's fine structured with expressive cherry and raspberry flavours. Great value at $19.95 from Vintages outlets. Try it with rack of lamb or duck breast. That's Maison Roche de Bellene Côtes de Nuits-Villages 2009 from Burgundy. For Post City Magazines, I'm Tony Aspler, 680News and 680News.com. ($19.95, Vintages #240473)
