680News wine reviews – September 23–25, 2011

Henry of Pelham Barrel-Fermented Chardonnay 2008
The 2008 vintage for white wines in Ontario was very good. And here's a local Chardonnay that you could pass off as a white Burgundy any day of the week. Henry of Pelham Barrel-Fermented Chardonnay 2008 is straw-coloured with that characteristic Burgundian touch of barnyard on the nose, riding on minerally, apple and toasty oak notes. It's rich and full on the palate with a fine, long nutty finish. You'll find it at Vintages outlets or at the winery in Saint Catharines for $19.95. Just the job for roast chicken or a runny French cheese. That's Henry of Pelham Barrel-Fermented Chardonnay 2008 from Ontario. For Post City Magazines, I'm Tony Aspler, 680 News and 680 News.com.  ($19.95, Vintages #268342)

Joseph Cattin Gewurztraminer 2009
Gewurztraminer is a grape you either love or hate. Like no other wine it proclaims itself loudly and proudly on the nose as soon as you pull the cork. An excellent example is Joseph Cattin Gewurztraminer 2009 from Alsace, the spiritual home of this fragrant variety. Deep golden in colour with a greenish tint, this wine has a spicy nose of lychee and rose petals. It's rich on the palate, fleshy and perfumed, finishing dry with good length. It's available at Vintages for $16.95 a bottle. Serve it with smoked salmon or with Thai dishes. Or best of all with Munster cheese. That's Joseph Cattin Gewurztraminer 2009 from Alsace. For Post City Magazines, I'm Tony Aspler, 680 News and 680 News.com. ($16.95, Vintages #224626)
