A blend of Malbec, Bonarda and Petit Verdot, made by Chilean winemaker Aurelio Montes in Argentina. Dense purple-ruby colour with a blackberry and vanilla oak nose; well extracted fruit, fresh and lively on the palate with a lingering chocolate and black fruit flavour; ripe tannins. ****½ (89)
Food match: roast beef; pork shish kabab

14 Hands Hot to Trot 2008 (Washington State)

A crowd-pleasing Syrah-based wine. Densely coloured; a nose of blackberries and sweet herbs; mouth-filling sweet fruit with a smoky note and a fresh acidic spine. Easy drinking. **** (88)

Megalomaniac Home Grown Red 2009 (Ontario)

A blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Cabernet Franc. Ruby coloured with a bouquet of cedar and currants; medium-bodied, dry with a floral note and lively acidity. Very claret-like. **** (88)
