680News wine reviews – November 4–6, 2011

Beronia Tempranillo Rioja 2007
The Spanish grape Tempranillo comes from the Spanish temprano, meaning "early" – in this case, early ripening which means that in its natural home, the Rioja region, it produces wines with great depth of strawberry or cherry flavours with soft tannins. The tradition in Rioja is to age Tempranillo in American oak barrels, which gives the wine a note of sandalwood on the nose. A good example at an affordable price is Beronia Tempranillo 2007. It costs $10.95 until November 6th and next week it goes up a buck.  Try it with braised short ribs. That's Beronia Tempranillo 2007 from Spain. For Post City Magazines, I'm Tony Aspler, 680News and 680News.com. ($10.95, LCBO #243055)

Dr. Hermann Riesling Kabinett 2008
I'm a great lover of Riesling from the Mosel. The winemakers there manage to extract extraordinary flavours from their slatey soil with as low as 7.5% alcohol. Currently at Vintages outlets is Dr. Hermann Riesling Kabinett 2008. The wine has a bouquet of citrus fruits and minerals with a floral note. It's light-bodied with a spicy, minerally, lime and honey flavour. It costs $16.95 at Vintages. Serve it as an aperitif or with pork dishes. That's Dr. Hermann Riesling Kabinett 2008 from Germany. For Post City Magazines, I'm Tony Aspler, 680News and 680News.com. ($16.96, Vintages #189647)
