 WINES OF THE WEEK

More Wines of the Week

  • Wolf Blass Red Label Semillon Sauvignon Blanc 2010
  • Lejay Lagoute Kir Royal
  • Beringer Stone Cellars California Merlot 2009

This week's wine recommendations are dedicated to my fellow Movember moustache-growers – to take your mind off the itching.

Wolf Blass Red Label Semillon Sauvignon Blanc 2010 (Australia)
$13.00 (LCBO #323063)
Pale straw in colour with a nose of pear, cut grass and lemon zest, it's light on the palate, dry and minerally with pear and peach flavours. ***½ (86+)
Food match: smoked salmon; Caesar salad

Lejay Lagoute Kir Royal (Burgundy)
$16.95 (LCBO #263582)
Kir is a French wine cocktail named after a Mayor of Dijon named Félix Kir. Traditionally it's a mix of white wine, like Chablis, with crème de cassis – the liqueur made from blackcurrants. If you make a Kir with champagne or a dry sparkling wine it's called a Kir Royal. Light ruby in colour, it tastes of crushed blackcurrants nicely balanced with citrus acidity. Chill it well. **** (88)
Food match: aperitif; lemon cake

Beringer Stone Cellars California Merlot 2009 (Napa)
$13.95 (LCBO #462473)
Beringer Vineyards is the oldest continuously operating winery in the Napa Valley and they have an amazing series of stone cellars under the property. They've named their bargain-priced line Stone Cellars. Deep ruby in colour with an earthy, cherry nose. The sweet soft fruit has a good mouth feel offering cherry and plum flavours with a minty note. It's medium-bodied and firmly structure with lively acidity. **** (87)
Food match: beef stew; Port Salut cheese
