680News wine reviews – January 6–8, 2012

Goats do Roam White 2010
The South African winery Goats Do Roam is a playful pun on the France's Côtes du Rhône region. They make a portfolio of red, white and rosé wines using Rhône varietals and having fun with labels like Goat Rôtie. Their Goats Do Roam White 2010 is a blend of Viognier, Roussanne and Grenache Blanc. The wine is a light straw colour with a bouquet of peach, minerals and white flowers. Medium-bodied and dry with lively acidity it's terrific value at $11.95 and a versatile food wine. Try it with garlic chicken. That's Goats Do Roam White 2010 from South Africa. For Post City Magazines, I'm Tony Aspler, 680News and 680News.com. ($11.95, LCBO #237313)

Domaine Pierre Fil Cuvée Elisyces 2007
Minervois in France's Languedoc-Roussillon region produces deeply coloured, powerful red wines from Carignan, Grenache, Mourvedre and other local varieties. And their price/quality ratio is generally very good. Domaine Pierre Fil Cuvée Elisyces 2007 is deep ruby in colour with a truffle, barnyard and black raspberry nose; it has a perfumed raspberry flavour, some sweetness here, full-bodied and fleshy but elegant in a Rubenesque kind of way. It costs $19.95 at Vintages outlets. That's Domaine Pierre Fil Cuvée Elisyces 2007 from France. Try it with red meat dishes. For Post City Magazines, I'm Tony Aspler, 680News and 680News.com. ($19.95, Vintage #251504)
