680News wine reviews – January 20–22, 2012

Anselmann Huxelrebe Auslese 2009
Huxelrebe is a German grape first propagated in 1927 by crossing Chasselas with a Muscat clone which produced an early ripening variety. This means it's ideal for sweet wines. Currently at Vintages is Anselmann Huxelrebe Auslese 2009 from the Pfalz region. Straw coloured with a greenish tint, it has a honeyed nose of ripe peaches; it's rich and unctuous on the palate with a sweet core. It costs $17.95. Try it with blue cheese or a fruit-based dessert. That's Anselmann Huxelrebe Auslese 2009 from Germany. For Post City Magazines, I'm Tony Aspler, 680News and 680News.com. ($17.95, Vintages #681445)

Montes Limited Selection Pinot Noir 2009
Chile's Casablanca Valley is a cool region in both senses of the word – and cool enough to produce interesting Pinot Noir. Montes Limited Selection Pinot Noir 2009, currently at Vintages outlets, is great value at $14.95 a bottle. Tawny ruby in colour, it offers a nose of sweet rhubarb and raspberry with licks of vanilla oak, aromas that are replicated on the palate; it's beautifully balanced, firmly structured and finishes on a dry spicy note. A wine for roast chicken or veal. That's Montes Limited Selection Pinot Noir 2009 from Chile. For Post City Magazines, I'm Tony Aspler, 680News and 680News.com. ($14.95, Vintages #37937)
