 WINES OF THE WEEK

More Wines of the Week

  • Thatched Cottage Sauvignon Blanc 2011
  • Ghione Piccole Moscato d'Asti 2010
  • Cantia Tollo Cuore Montepulciano D'Abruzzo 2008

Three wines from Vintages' February 4th release:

Thatched Cottage Sauvignon Blanc 2011 (Marlborough, New Zealand)
$17.95 (Vintages #262782)
A Sauvignon that shouts at you from the glass. Almost water white, but what concentration of aroma and flavour: high toned nose of cut grass and green fig; medium-bodied, lip-smacking acidity and juicy gooseberry flavour. ****½ (89)
Food match: grilled fish; goat's cheese

Ghione Piccole Moscato d'Asti 2010 (Piedmont, Italy)
$15.95 (Vintages #192443)
A Valentine's Day wine. Sweet, low alcohol and spritzy on the tongue. Pale straw colour with a nose of carnations and oranges. Light and bubbly on the palate, its sweetness ameliorated by citrus acidity. Like biting into fresh grapes. Great value. ****½ (89)
Food match: aperitif wine; angel cake

Cantia Tollo Cuore Montepulciano D'Abruzzo 2008 (Abruzzo, Italy)
$14.95 (Vintages #230631)
Dense purple-black in colour with an earthy, blackcurrant nose; rustic and fruity with good concentration of black fruit, spice and mineral flavours; chunky mouth feel. Great value **** (88)
Food match: lamb stew; spaghetti puttanesca
