680News wine reviews – March 2–4, 2012

Obikwa Cabernet Sauvignon 2011
Looking for a Cabernet Sauvignon under $9? Well, look no further than the South African shelves at the LCBO. Obikwa Cabernet Sauvignon 2011 is really good value. Dense purple in colour with a smoky, earthy nose of blackcurrants; it's full-bodied and soft on the palate with plum and cassis flavours and a note of pencil lead. A pizza or hamburger wine if ever there was one. That's Obikwa Cabernet Sauvignon 2011 from South Africa. For Post City Magazines, I'm Tony Aspler, 680News and 680News.com. ($8.95, LCBO #665323)

Freixenet Cordon Rosado
If you want to hasten the arrival of spring, pour yourself a glass of a charming sparking rosé. Freixenet Cordon Rosado from Spain's Penedes region is pink with a bluish tint in colour; on the nose you get aromas of raspberry candy. It's light on the palate with a sweetish raspberry flavour mitigated by lemony acidity. It costs $12.95 a bottle. You can serve it as an aperitif or with a ham salad. That's Freixenet Cordon Rosado from Spain. For Post City Magazines, I'm Tony Aspler, 680News and 680News.com. ($12.95, LCBO #217059)
