 WINES OF THE WEEK

More Wines of the Week

  • Hungaria Dunántúli Sauvignon Blanc
  • Sauvion Muscadet Sevre et Maine Sur lie 2010
  • Marimar Estate La Masía Don Miguel Vineyard Chardonnay 2007

Hungaria Dunántúli Sauvignon Blanc (Hungary)
$9.95 LCBO (#269688)
When I think of Sauvignon Blanc my mind doesn't immediately leap to Hungary but I was very surprised by the quality of a wine from that country. The wine is pale straw in colour with a nose of green plum, cut grass and grapefruit; it's medium-bodied, crisply dry, clean and fresh with a grapefruit and passion fruit flavour. ***½ (86)
Food match: grilled fish; goat's cheese salad

Sauvion Muscadet Sevre et Maine Sur lie 2010 (Loire Valley)
$12.95 (LCBO #143016)
A white wine that tends to get overlooked in the rush to Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc is Muscadet from the Loire Valley. This wine is crisply dry with flavours of lemon and lemon blossom with a thread of minerality. ***½ (86)
Food match: shrimp; oysters

Marimar Estate La Masía Don Miguel Vineyard Chardonnay 2007 (California)
$19.95 (Vintages #270090)
Marimar Torres, of the Spanish Torres family, has an estate in California's Green Valley where she produces exceptionally good Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. Deep straw colour, its bouquet is a rich, spicy mix of orange blossom, peach and creamy vanilla oak with a touch of forest floor. It's full-bodied with a lovely mouth feel, great length and a nutty finish. ***** (90)
Food match: salmon; roast chicken
