680News wine reviews – March 16–18, 2012

Whitehaven Pinot Noir 2008
I'm a great fan of New Zealand Pinot Noir, which usually ends up on the shelves of vintages' outlets. But recently one has appeared on the LCBO's general list: Whitehaven Pinot Noir 2008. Purple-ruby in colour, it has a nose of violets, black raspberries and beetroot. It's medium-bodied, dry and firmly structured with well integrated oak. Just the kind of red wine that you can serve with grilled salmon or duck breast. It costs $22.95. That's Whitehaven Pinot Noir 2008 from New Zealand. For Post City Magazines, I'm Tony Aspler. 680News and 680News.com. ($22.95, LCBO #245696)

Citra Montepulciano d'Abruzzo 2010
A drinkable red wine for under $7 a bottle, you gotta be kidding. Actually, I'm not. Citra Montepulciano d'Abruzzo 2010 from Italy's Abruzzo region costs $6.95. It's deep ruby in colour with a woodsy, black cherry nose; dry and rustic on the palate, it has a cherry pit flavour with lively acidity. It's quaffable at a laughable price. Try it with tomato-based pasta or pizza. That's Citra Montepulciano d'Abruzzo 2010 from Italy. For Post City Magazines, I'm Tony Aspler. 680News and 680News.com. ($6.95, LCBO #446633)
