 WINES OF THE WEEK

More Wines of the Week

  • J. Lohr Chardonnay 2001
  • Delicato Family Vineyards Shiraz 2001
  • CV Vineyard Zinfandel 2001

On Monday, April 14, I attended the California Wine Fair at the Fairmont Royal York Hotel in Toronto. While I didn't manage to taste all of the 300 and some wines shown by 38 wineries, I did try some terrific wines, many of which are not available here. One in particular I'd like to see in our stores is Steele Wines Shooting Star Sauvignon Blanc 2001. If you're in California, look for it.

Bogle Vineyards Phantom 2000 is also not available, but again, if you're going to California, you have try this blend of Old Vine Zinfandel, Petite Sirah and Old Vine Mourvedre. It retails there for around $16.

The wines you will be able to find in our market are the following:

J. Lohr Chardonnay 2001
$23.50 (general list)
Bright straw colour; caramel and caraway seed nose; mouth-filling, orange and tropical fruit flavours with a caramel note. Full-bodied with good length.
Food match: pork tenderloin, Epoisse cheese

Delicato Family Vineyards Shiraz 2001
$11.95 (general list)
Dense purple colour; vanilla and blackberry nose; full-bodied with juicy fruit, well balanced with a blackberry and mocha flavour; soft tannic finish.
Food match: beef stew, hamburgers

CV Vineyard Zinfandel 2001
$14.05 (general list)
Purple-ruby colour; plum skin nose with a touch of oak; sweet blackberry fruit, soft and mellow, easy drinking. A wine you could chill for a backyard BBQ.
Food match: ham steaks, spicy pork ribs
