680News wine reviews – September 7–9, 2012

La Casona de Castaño Old Vines Monastrell 2011
Monastrell is what the Spaniards call the Mourvèdre grape of the southern Rhone. One of the best value reds currently at the LCBO is La Casona de Castaño Old Vines Monastrell 2011 from Spain's Yecla region. It's deep purple in colour with a spicy, black cherry and pipe tobacco nose. Full-bodied, richly extracted with a perfumed blackberry flavour, it's mouth-filling with a firm tannic finish. It costs $8.90 a bottle and it's ideal for barbecue burgers or ribs. That's La Casona de Castaño Old Vines Monastrell 2011 from Spain. For Post City Magazines, I'm Tony Aspler, 680News and 680News.com. ($8.90, LCBO #143743)

Ken Forrester Petit Chenin Blanc 2011
Chenin Blanc is South Africa's signature white grape. Currently at the LCBO is a bargain-priced example of this versatile food wine: Ken Forrester Petit Chenin Blanc 2011. It's light straw in colour and offers a minerally nose of pear with a floral top note. It's clean and dry with pear and peach flavours. A well-made wine and good value at $11.95 until September 16th, then it goes up a dollar. Try it with shrimp dishes. That's Ken Forrester Petit Chenin Blanc 2011 from South Africa. For Post City Magazines, I'm Tony Aspler, 680News and 680News.com. ($11.95 until Sept. 16th, LCBO #266106)
