Ontario Wine Awards 2003 Winners

The eighth annual Ontario Wine Awards took place May 2 at the Fairmont Royal York, celebrating the premium quality of local Ontario wines. Gold, silver and bronze medals were awarded in 28 categories based on the judging results of four tasting panels. The most prestigious Toronto Star Wine of the Year trophy was awarded to Palatine Hill's 1998 Vidal Icewine, the wine that received the highest aggregate score of the competition.

The Ontario Wine Society's Winemaker of the Year Award went to Lakeview Cellars' Eddy Gurinskas in recognition of his consistent yet innovative ability to produce quality wines from a broad spectrum of Ontario-grown grapes. The traditional prize, a Raymond Weil watch, was presented to him for his leadership role in Ontario winemaking.

With the awards in their eighth year, event founder and wine expert Tony Aspler was pleased with the calibre of wines and commitment to quality by wineries. "The entries increase each year at an astonishing rate, proving the dedication that local vintners have to producing world-class wines," states Tony. He went on to say, "The awards keep growing and with the addition of new categories such as the Ontario Tourism Wine Journalism Award and the overall generosity of our sponsors, there is no limit to this event in sight."

The 2003 competition drew 376 entries in 25 categories which were evaluated blind by four panels of professional tasters. Each panel has a long history of assessing wines from around the world and their selection of gold, silver, bronze medal-winning wines is an indication of high quality for the consuming public.

The event was hosted by Seamus O'Regan of CTV's Canada AM and featured a special video presentation by the members of the Barenaked Ladies, proud supporters of the Ontario wine industry and sponsors of the Awards. The Honourable Tim Hudak, Minister of Consumer and Business Services, showed his continued support of the industry by attending and briefly addressing the audience.
