 WINES OF THE WEEK

More Wines of the Week

  • Bottega Il Vino dei Poeti Rosé Brut
  • Konzelmann Barrel Aged Shiraz 2011
  • Hardy's The Gamble Chardonnay Pinot Gris 2011

Bottega Il Vino dei Poeti Rosé Brut (Veneto)
$12.25 (LCBO #277202)
You can feel good about sipping on a glass of this pink bubby Brut because you'll be supporting Princess Margaret Hospital's Cancer Foundation. Sandro Bottega, the proprietor of this Prosecco house in Veneto, is donating a portion of the price to the foundation. On the nose, the wine smells of raspberries with a note of ginger. It's dry and easy drinking with a red apple flavour. **** (88)
Food match: aperitif; charcuterie

Konzelmann Barrel Aged Shiraz 2011 (Ontario)
$12.95 (LCBO #144857)
Ontario Shiraz is not going to taste like Australian Shiraz. We just don't have the climate to make fruit bombs. This Shiraz is more like Syrah from the northern Rhone. The wine is dense purple in colour with a nose of blackberry and pepper with spicy oak and a herbal note. ****½ (89)
Food match: ribs; spicy lamb dishes

Hardy's The Gamble Chardonnay Pinot Gris 2011 (South Australia)
$14.95 (LCBO #219147)
The Australians have no fear when it comes to wine. They'll blend anything with anything. Take Hardy's the Gamble 2011. It's a blend of Chardonnay and Pinot Gris – the two most popular grapes on the planet. Well, the gamble paid off. Pale straw in colour with a nose of clove and pear, this wine has a peachy flavour, a soft mouth feel and a dry clovey finish. **** (87)
Food match: roast chicken; grilled salmon
