 WINES OF THE WEEK

More Wines of the Week

  • Boekenhoutskloof The Wolftrap Syrah Mourvèdre Viognier 2011
  • Bellingham Chardonnay Viognier 2010
  • Lady Anne Barnard Cabernet Sauvignon 2010

This week three South African wines:

Boekenhoutskloof The Wolftrap Syrah Mourvèdre Viognier 2011(Cape of Good Hope)
($12.95 until February 3, then $13.95, LCBO #292557)
Boekenhoutskloof has been doing a great job with grapes usually associated with the Rhone Valley. The blend of Syrah, Mourvèdre, Viognier produces a deep ruby-coloured wine with a nose of blackberries and black olives. The full-bodied savoury taste of blackberries with an iodine note fills the mouth. ****½ (89)
Food match: red meat dishes

Bellingham Chardonnay Viognier 2010 (Franschhoek Valley)
($13.95, Vintages #295345)
Another interesting white blend. Light straw colour with a green tint; leesy apple and pineapple nose with a touch of oak; full in the mouth, rich and spicy with pineapple and orange flavours and a fine spine of acidity that gives length to the wine. Good value. (88+)
Food match: roast chicken; crab salad

Lady Anne Barnard Cabernet Sauvignon 2010 (Coastal Region)
($16.95, Vintages #101758)
A well-crafted wine at a great price. Dense ruby-purple colour; smoky, cedar and blackcurrant nose; well extracted flavours of blackcurrant; medium to full-bodied, fruit-driven, dry with soft ripe tannins and balancing acidity. Good length. (89)
Food match: roast lamb; mature cheddar
