680News wine reviews – February 1–3, 2013

Robert Mondavi Private Selection Cabernet Sauvignon 2011
Robert Mondavi is one of those icon names in the wine world. Even though he is no longer with us, his brand is one of the most recognizable in the world. And the quality remains. Robert Mondavi Private Selection Cabernet Sauvignon 2011 is deep ruby colour with a bouquet of cedar, blackcurrant, toasty oak and a floral top note. Medium-bodied, sweet fruit with plum and currant flavours, it's soft on the palate with a tannic lift on the finish. It costs $17.95 at the LCBO. Match it with roast lamb. That's Robert Mondavi Private Selection Cabernet Sauvignon 2011 from California. For Post City Magazines, I'm Tony Aspler, 680News and 680News.com. ($17.95, LCBO #392225)

Bodegas Borsao Tres Picos Garnacha 2010
Recently I tasted a wine from just south of Spain's Rioja region that amazed me because I thought I was sampling a Chateauneuf-du-Pape at under $20. The wine was Bodegas Borsao Tres Picos Garnacha 2010. It had the dense, dark purple-black colour of the southern Rhone, a spicy, herbal, blackberry nose and it was full and savoury on the palate. It costs $19.95 at Vintages outlets. An ideal wine for rich meat dishes. That's Bodegas Borsao Tres Picos Garnacha 2010 from the Campo de Borja region in Spain. For Post City Magazines, I'm Tony Aspler, 680News and 680News.com. ($19.95, Vintages #273748)
