 WINES OF THE WEEK

More Wines of the Week

  • Masi Modello delle Venezie Bianco 2011
  • Domaine de la Tourlaudière Muscadet Sèvres et Maine Sur Lie 2011
  • Goats Do Roam Red 2011

Masi Modello delle Venezie Bianco 2011 (Veneto)
$10.95 (LCO #564674)
Usually we think red wine when we think Italy but the northern provinces make some nifty whites. This wine is a blend of 85% Pinot Grigio with 15% local varieties. Three months in oak has rounded it out its ripe peach and grapefruit flavours. A good quaffing wine with lively acidity. **** (87)
Food match:  grilled  fish; chicken

Domaine de la Tourlaudière Muscadet Sèvres et Maine Sur Lie 2011 (Loire)
$13.95 (Vintages #171694)
Global warming must have something to do with it because Muscadet from the Loire doesn't seem to be as austerely dry as it used to be. This wine, currently at Vintages outlets, is a light golden colour which shows some maturity; it has a minerally, apple nose and well extracted flavours. If I had this wine blind I would have thought it was a Soave. It's well balanced with clean lines and a lingering fresh finish. **** (88)
Food match: seafood; ratatouille

Goats Do Roam Red 2011 (South Africa)
$12.95 (LCBO #718940)
Goats Do Roam is the playfully satiric name of a South African winery that actually does have goats roaming on the property. Their red blend of Syrah, Cinsaut, Mourvèdre, Grenache and Petite Sirah has a smoky nose of black fruits. Expect plum and blackberry flavours with a spicy savoury note and a finish of toasted herbs and dark chocolate. A very complex wine for the price. **** (88)
Food match: pepper steak; parmesan cheese
