680News wine reviews – April 19–21, 2013

El Halcón Old Vine Tempranillo 2009
Spain's Ribera del Duero region makes some stunning red wines from the Tempranillo grape. Currently at Vintages is El Halcón Old Vine Tempranillo 2009. Dense purple in colour, this wine has a spicy-herbal nose of plums and sandalwood. It's full-bodied, around on the palate and good value at $17.95. A wine for steak or hearty red meat dishes. That's El Halcón Old Vine Tempranillo 2009 from Spain at Vintages outlets. For Post City Magazines, I'm Tony Aspler, 680News and 680News.com. ($17.95, Vintages #313783)

Creekside Laura's White 2010
Creekside Winery in Niagara produces a white blend called Laura's White, after the previous owner Laura McCain. It's a fruit salad of a blend with Chardonnay, Chardonnay Musqué, Pinot Gris, Muscat, Gewurztraminer, Viognier, and Sauvignon Blanc. It's got an apple and lychee nose and complex flavours of grapefruit, apple and lychee. A well balanced, medium-bodied wine. It costs $18.95 at Vintages outlets. Try it with trout in almonds or chicken paprika. That's Creekside Laura's White 2010 from Ontario. For Post City Magazines, I'm Tony Aspler, 680News and 680News.com. ($18.95, Vintages #121764)
