  • Malivoire Lady Bug Rose 2002
  • Thirteenth Street Premier Cuvée 1998

Masi Soave 2002 (Veneto)
$10.95
Made from Garganega and Trebbiano, this wine has more fruit than other Soaves in its price category. Very pale colour, almost water white, it has a nose of peach pits and stones. Very expressive on the palate with a white peach and citrus flavour combined with minerals. The acid on the finish renders it a little hard but a good wine for the price. ***½
Food match: grilled trout, spaghetti alle vongole

Malivoire Lady Bug Rose 2002 (Niagara Peninsula, Ontario)
$15 (Vintages stores or the winery – 866-644-2244, 905-563-9253)
Simply the best rosé I have tasted from Canadian soil. 85% Cabernet Franc with the rest made up of Gamay, Pinot noir and Chardonnay Musqué. Deep pink in colour with a bluish tint; strawberry, rose petal nose; full-bodied, elegant, clean strawberry and lychee nut flavour with just a hint of residual sweetness and a tannic lift on the finish. ****
Food match: cassoulet, cold meats.

Thirteenth Street Premier Cuvée 1998 (Niagara Peninula, Ontario)
$25 (winery only – 905-562-8766 or Kathy@13thstreetwines.com or through agents Hobbs & Co. 416-964-3689)
This boutique winery produces some of the best wines in Ontario, especially Gamay and Pinot Noir. Their first effort at a champagne-method sparkler is very good, although there's not much left. A blend of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, it has a light colour and tiny bubbles; the nose is a mix of apple and leather, the flavour elegant green apple and lemon; light-bodied, clean with a long finish. ****½
Food match: grilled plaice, aperitif
