680News wine reviews – August 16–18, 2013

Calliope Sauvignon Blanc 2011
Burrowing Owl winery in the Okanagan has an admirable reputation. Unfortunately we don't see many of their wines in the LCBO, but recently arrived is a wine from their second label, Calliope. Calliope Sauvignon Blanc 2011 is very pale in colour with a floral, herbaceous, grapefruit nose. The wine is full-bodied with green plum and citrus flavours and lively acidity. It costs $19.95 at Vintages. Serve it with grilled fish or Caesar salad. That's Calliope Sauvignon Blanc 2011 from BC. For Post City Magazines, I'm Tony Aspler, 680News and 680News.com. ($19.95, Vintages #258905)

Château de Fontenelles Cuvée Notre Dame 2009
Corbières in the Languedoc-Roussillon region of southern France produces heady red wines ideal for the BBQ. Château de Fontenelles Cuvée Notre Dame 2009, currently at Vintages, is a blend of Syrah, Grenache Noir, Mourvèdre and old vine Carignan. It costs $16.95. The wine is dense purple-ruby in colour with a spicy, herbal, blackberry nose. It's soft and full on the palate, dry, savoury and smoky with a plushy tannic finish. Match it with steak. That's Château de Fontenelles Cuvée Notre Dame 2009 from France. For Post City Magazines, I'm Tony Aspler, 680News and 680News.com. ($16.95, Vintages #269522)
