More Wines of the Week

  • Alvinte Albariño 2010
  • Château des Charmes Earth & Sky Riesling 2011
  • Strewn Two Vines Cabernet Merlot 2010

Alvinte Albariño 2010 (Spain)
$14.85 (LCBO #288126)
Albariño is a grape grown in Galicia, a region in northwest Spain bordering on Portugal. As its name suggests, it's a white grape from the Rhine, so it may be a clone of Riesling. This wine has a nose of melon and pear with a floral note. The palate offers dry apple and pineapple flavours, fresh with lively acidity which gives the wine good length. **** (88)
Food match: roast chicken or seafood

Château des Charmes Earth & Sky Riesling 2011 (Ontario)
$14.95 (LCBO #343350)
Earth and Sky is a new bargain-priced label from Ontario's Château des Charmes. It has a nose of honey and grapefruit with a floral note. The wine is off-dry, nicely balanced with honey, grapefruit and lime flavours that finish well on the palate. **** (88)
Food match: Asian dishes; light curries

Strewn Two Vines Cabernet Merlot 2010 (Ontario)
$12.95 (LCBO #590109)
An Ontario red that's well worth the price. Ruby in colour with a tawny note, it has a nose of cedar, tobacco and cherry jam. On the palate it offers lively sour cherry and redcurrant flavours. It's medium-bodied, dry with fresh acidity. **** (87)
Food match: hamburgers; pizza
