Top Picks from Vintages' June Releases

June 7 release:

Look for the Gold and Silver medal winning Ontario VQA wines from the ONTARIO WINE AWARDS competition in selected Vintages Stores.

Geyser Peak Winery Zinfandel 2000 (Sonoma County, California)
$24.95
This wine is one of nineteen California Zins to be released this month and, to my palate, the best. This is a take-no-prisoners Zin, full of rich, jammy blackberry fruit, dark and full-bodied with a beguiling sweetness at its core yet with enough architecture to support its fatness.

Saintsbury Chardonnay Unfiltered 2001 (Carneros, California)
$33.50
Another full-flavoured Chard from California but with better acidity than most. Straw-coloured with a Burgundian nose of warm hay and apple; toasty and spicy with rich hazelnut and citrus flavours; well balanced with great length.

Schloss Reinhartshausen Erbacher Hohenrain Riesling Spätlese 1990 (Rheingau)
$21.95
A mouthful in all senses of the word. A great example of what happens to Riesling when ages so gracefully. Golden colour with a green hue; honey and peach on the nose with a rich, mineral and dried apricot flavour. A perfect tension between honeyed sweetness and citrus acidity.

June 21 release:

Bonny Doon Ca' del Solo Malvasia Bianca 2000 (Monterey County, California)
$21.95
A great summer sipping wine. Pale straw colour with a perfumed nose of carnation and spices, very Muscat-like; off-dry, medium-bodied with a bold, clean grapey Muscat flavour. Good length.

Babich Pinot Gris 2002 (Marlborough, New Zealand)
$17.95
Joe Babich makes very elegant, understated wines that shine like gems. Medium straw colour, delicate white peach bouquet with a hint of spice; clean and true, medium-bodied with a round, soft mouthfeel with deceptively bright acidity.

Tenuta Fontodi Chianti Classico 2000 (Tuscany)
$27.95
This Chianti comes on like a Riserva with its intensity and concentration. Dense purple colour showing some maturity at the rim; a heady mix of vanilla, plum and cedar on the nose; ripe fruit, richly extracted; medium-bodied, plum and mineral flavours, elegant and well balanced.

For reviews of all the wines I tasted from both releases, see my wine reviews (members only).
