Alamos Cabernet Sauvignon 2012 (Argentina)
$13.95 (LCBO #295105)
This Cabernet Sauvignon from Argentina punches above its weight value wise. Dense purple-ruby in colour, it's redolent of blackcurrant, cedar and vanilla oak aromas. The flavour is concentrated and well balanced. **** (88)
Food match: lamb chops or roast beef

Moulin de Gassac Merlot 2011 (France)
$13.95 (LCBO #340950)
Mas de Domas Gassac produces some of the best wines in the Languedoc. Their second label which is much more affordable than their top wines is Moulin de Gassac. This Merlot is dense purple in colour with an earthy blueberry nose. Medium-bodied and richly extracted, it's dry and spicy with a warm finish. ****½ (89)
Food matches: red meat dishes or strong cheeses

Moselland Ars Vitis Riesling Winter Scene 2012 (Germany)
$9.95 (LCBO #589929)
An old-style German Riesling in a new package at a price that is very reasonable. Pale straw in colour with typical off-dry Riesling aromas of lime and honey. The wine is light and medium-bodied with good length. **** (87)
Food matches: pork dishes or as a sipping wine before dinner
